Why do you need to consider Ductless Fume Hood for your New Laboratory Design

Filtration technology have advanced so rapidly over the years.  This technology trend has resulted a movement toward Ductless Fume Hood (also called Green Fume Hood) by the laboratory designer.  The ductless fume hood is adopted side by side together with ducted fume hood in the laboratory, it is now see as an “must-have” solution for every new laboratory.

Implementation of Ductless Fume Hood together with Ducted Fume Hood, could provide significant construction and operating cost savings.  It also provide obvious benefit of which it reduces the quantity of chemical pollutants released in the environment.     However, ductless fume hood is such a paradigm shift for laboratory designers that it is often difficult to visualise its full impact.   Recently, Mr. Ken Crooks, Director of Green Fume Hood technology at Erlab, has created a video. This video made the invisible visible, by helping you visualise all the implications of ductless technology in terms of construction and operating cost.

Beside the new laboratory, Ductless Fume Hood is often the first choice at following conditions :

1. When the building has no way to provide “make-up air” into the lab to replace exhausted air.

2. When the laboratory has no structural access to install ductwork.

3. When the laboratory lacks funding for extra ductwork.

4. When the laboratory has no intention to compliance to DOE’s Environmental Quality (Clean Air) Reg.

5. When the cost of building infrastructure to retrofit an existing laboratory with a new fume hood is prohibitive.

6. When the laboratory management wish to save energy and operation cost in long run.

7. When the laboratory is going for sustainable environmental friendly and to be accredited for green building index/certification.
